EYE and ENT: November
24-25, 2006
The EYE and ENT camp was the last one to be conducted this year. The
doctors from BEENT Hospital, Chengalpattu were the benefactors.
The EYE Team: Headed by
Dr. Rangini Sundararajan
M.S., who has missed no opportunity to equip herself with the latest technologies in cataract surgery,
the team managed to screen around 100 patients and select 20 patients for I.O.L. One patient was
operated on both eyes thus making the number of implants
21. Dr Rangini is also an ardent admirer and disciple of late Dr. Venkatasamy of Aravind Eye Hospitals, Madurai.
The ENT Team: Headed by
Dr. Sundararajan,
an ideal
spouse to Dr. Rangini and they are made, not only
for each other but for the society at large!
Dr. Sundararajan has proved himself with his remarkable ability to reverse 20 years in techniques
to suit the local conditions and be right back to the latest technologies! He prefers to do adult tonsillectomies
under local anaesthesia,
(has so far done above 15 cases in our
centre alone) as
Dr. Devarajan, our visiting anesthetist may always not accompany the team.
He has done more than 6 mastoidectomies with tympanoplasties. We also had the opportunity to witness F.E.S. with
Telemonitoring during
this camp for the first time at our centre, for a case of
nasal polyps almost of all sinuses, and another case of chronic dacryocystitis. Another patient benefited from a tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy.
Though this was an absorbing, time-consuming and challenging surgery, the greatest satisfaction for Dr. Sundararajan was when he removed a foreign body lodged for 3 years in the ear of a 5-year old child. This impacted
foreign body had to be removed under ketamine, with the help of a microscope and above all with a timely innovation of a 'hook' made out of an 18fr. needle. The surgeon felt that the moist eyes of the grateful parents who had been going around for three years and were demanded 15,000 rupees by a specialist was one of the best gifts that gives such a joy that no one can take away. He attributed the outcome to divine help. Isn't this the kind of joy that Christ promised? The joy that no one can take away?! May be, many of us are missing this promise trying to find ‘joy’ from wrong things and in wrong places!
